Comedian Charlie George fronts artist Amartey Golding’s project, tackling the task of creating a new national anthem in just one show.

England’s having an identity crisis. Comedian Charlie George and our house band front a new show by artist Amartey Golding for Dreamy Place 2023, Whose Anthem Is It Anyway?

Together with the audience, they’ll attempt to tackle the impossible task of delivering a new national anthem for England.

There might be a lot about being English we’d prefer to distance ourselves from, but can music bring us together!? What better way to usher in England 2.0 than creating a new national anthem?

Drawing on our nation’s rich musical heritage, from Grime to Triphop, Britpop to Bhangra, nothing is off the table in this raucous production of music, comedy and democratic process.

Witness the sound of our nation come to life through Charlie’s wry and witty takes on the state of the nation, quick-thinking improv from our house band, and the most important ingredient: the audience!

Can Charlie find a way to bring the room, if not the nation, together to create a song that represents what we’re really about?

By the end of the show, we will have collaboratively created a frankenstein of an anthem, that we will all sing together. No matter how bad it is!

This is a funny and warm look at the impossible situation of creating one song for an entire nation, but also acts as a vehicle to ask how English people feel about themselves and their nation, grappling with that indefinable and elusive thing that makes England ‘England’.

There will be a matinee and an evening perfomance of Whose Anthem Is It Anyway? as part of the wider programme of Dreamy Place Launch Programme delivered by Lighthouse.

12:30pm – 2pm: Whose Anthem Is It Anyway?

Sitting somewhere between Stussy and Mind, eott is a Brighton-based mental health project with a growing, devoted following – and deservedly so. Their mission is to normalise the conversation around our minds, raising awareness and funds for good causes through the curation of relative means such as fashion, visual arts and words.

Expect all of the above in our Dreamy Place Launch programme, with a trade show-style event spotlighting local talent, including live demonstrations by a local martial arts gym and a selection of curated short films programmed by Lighthouse Young Creatives alumni: Erin James, Hazel Davis and Lara Antoine.

The afternoon will culminate with an engaging ‘group therapy session’ talk, featuring collaborators and members of the public.

‘Who is Still Dreaming,’ exists in a liminal space between raving and resting, where the dancefloor becomes a portal to the subconscious, soundtracked by a woozy fusion of psychedelic tech and affected EDM.

For one night only, Fabrica Gallery transforms into a fleeting dream, with beats that pulse and thrum like the heart of the night and melodies that meander like a wisp of dreamy fog, you’ll find yourself in a realm of pure ethereality. Shadows morph and dance with you, salt lamps cast an incandescent spell, and UV light reveals the secrets of this liminal space.

Who Is Still Dreaming? Is brought to you by local arts producer, creative community organiser and artist Tarik Elmoutawakil, (Marlborough Productions/ Brownton Abbey/ Radical Rhizomes). Co-produced by installation artist Thomas Buckley.

Martin Goya Business DJs GUAN and LimboLimbs come to Fabrica to raise a storm of music and dance.

Following sell-out performances across China, Martin Goya Business DJs GUAN and LimboLimbs come to Brighton’s iconic Fabrica venue to raise a storm of music and dance.

Both DJs are native to the underground club scenes of Shanghai, Beijing and Hong Kong, creating vibrant scenes using techno, experimental sound and sampling, often working with sound and visuals to create visually rich sonic experiences.

GUAN (Guan Boyang) is an electronic music producer and digital media artist from Hangzhou. He is currently signed under the Modern Sky label and has established himself firmly in the Chinese music scene with his unique digital dystopian aesthetics. Graduating from the China Academy of Art, he has developed his own distinctive approach to sound and other mediums, critically examining the relationship between humans and technology in digital society.

GUAN’s work is characterised by its eccentricity and is known for its fusion and versatility in musical genres. Through his imaginative exploration of future mutant organisms, he has created a “high-tech naturalism” sound system, where radical sonic experiments shape bizarre and organic landscapes.

LimboLimbs is a music producer from Eating Music (Shanghai). She is a talented musician, mixing jazz elements with strange, sampled sounds to make her work. Her tastes vary between the cutting edge and sometimes stubbornly traditional, hovering between the old school and the new, while constantly exploring the space where her aesthetic ideas can be established.

LimboLimbs’ concept of music is personal but not selfish. She likes to bring fun and humour to people, and tell absurd stories through music, which is her spiritual sustenance.

As a DJ, she has been active in music festivals and underground clubs, specialising in a dramatic and aggressive style. She is also the organiser of a high-BPM club night called ‘Helplessly’ in Shanghai.

Tickets for this event also include entrance to the club night and dreamy dance party with Brighton’s own Tarik Elmoutawakil. A 5-hour combo event with artists and DJs from Brighton and Shanghai, bringing together a unique musical and visual feast, with sound, visuals and performance. All for only £5. Tickets can be booked here

New voices, New Stories

Thanks to the National Lottery Heritage Fund Brighton & Hove Museums have taken the opportunity to shake up our formula with Telling Tales, Talking Trails. In collaboration with volunteers, we developed a set of digital experiments aimed at introducing new ways of storytelling.

A Preston Manor audio guide was introduced in 2022. This is a spoken WebApp tour with transcribed text and images created by volunteers, this is accessed through a browser on your mobile device as you walk around the building or can be enjoyed in the comfort of your own home.

This was followed by One Minute Wonders in 2023. This combined the power of digital storytelling with an exhibition of animal and plant-related prints and drawings from our collection.

The third and final phase of our project, Telling Tales, Talking Trails is now underway. It will once again include the contribution of volunteers to create new digital stories for Brighton Museum & Art Gallery and develop more inclusive ways of storytelling.

We would like to share with you our methods and findings on Thursday 19 October at Preston Manor at our museum digital storytelling seminar. Doors will open at 10am and the day will be broken into two sessions with guest speakers in the morning, followed by lunch, and then in the afternoon, an opportunity to explore Preston Manor and experience our WebApp tour for yourself.

This is a free ticketed event with a limited number of places available.
Especially for Dreamy Place you’re invited to explore the Victorian Cab Road tunnel that runs beneath Brighton Railway Station.

Usually off limits to the public, the secret 80-metre tunnel will be transformed into an immersive installation of sound, video and light.

For three days only the tunnel will be transformed into a luminescent landscape with sounds by Chinese artist GUAN as part of a collaborative installation co-created and produced by artist Thomas Buckley.

Special thanks to British Council and Arts Council England for their support in making this project happen.

WARNING: Strobing lights (not safe for people with epilepsy or light sensitivity) and uneven floors (please be careful when walking in the tunnel as it is also dark) – please be aware before entering the space.

A collection of films by Chinese artists, curated by Hangzhou’s artists’ agency Martin Goya Business. Showing as a group exhibition at Lighthouse, films by artists CHILLCHILL, GUAN, LazyBackHome, Uan and Zhu Jinkun will surprise, challenge and consume viewers.

About the artists in the exhibition

CHILLCHILL is an artist whose art practice revolves around urban life, third world and subculture. He uses his unique sense of humour to mix the virtual world and the real world he lives in. He mentions his work as a “stand-up show about realism”. He works on 3D rendered moving images and live performances with real- time rendering by game engines.

LazyBackHome attempts to deconstruct these observations and visually represent the fragmented nature of the information era through collage. Her work delves into the triangular relationship among media, authority, and individuals, deeply embedded in the context of the internet society.
She has shown work at The Wrong Digital Art Biennale, Florence Biennale, OTA FINE ART Gallery, Ars Electronica’s “Yami-Ichi,” and Venice Biennale. In 2023, she conducted a residency at the Swatch Art Peace Hotel Art Center in Shanghai.

Uan is an independent artist, mainly using installation, moving images and performance as creative media, engaged in art and fashion for about 10 years, and now lives in Shanghai. Since graduating from Central Saint Martins Womenswear, She worked as an art director for various media and brands, stages and videos, T Magazine, VOGUE, Bazaar fashion, Instyle, GQ etc. Meanwhile, she is active as a visual artist, installation maker and performer in art exhibitions, club culture, fashion shows and other multi-dimensional stages.

Uan’s works are characterised by a kind of role-playing/magical/occult/virtual idol/eroticism/cyborg, exploring the Intersections of Audio-Visual, Performance, and Installation Art, refer to investigate the intersections of these forms of art, with a focus on how they can be combined to create innovative and immersive art experiences. to stimulate hyper-real sensory trips.

Zhu Jinkun focuses on the complex network society, reveals the halo under the authority of media and technology, and responds to or subverts reality with the weirdness in it. In the context of the global Internet, the boundaries of identity, community, and culture have melted and broken, and the contradictions and conflicts born when this knot was opened are staged in turn between reality and fiction.

His works have been exhibited at 660 Madison Avenue, COMA Gallery, Venice Armory, Zhejiang Art Museum, MARTIN GOYA BUSINESS, chi K11 Art Center (Hong Kong), TANK ART Shanghai, West Bund Art Museum (Shanghai), Liu Haisu Art Museum, CEF Experimental Image Center.
